Aboud, Frances E.
Dr. Frances E. Aboud, is a Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychology at McGill University in Montreal,
Canada. She conducts research on the development of racial prejudice in children. She also studies children's friendships
and publishes in the area of international health psychology. Dr. Aboud holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from McGill University
in Montreal, Canada.
Afsar, Rita
Dr. Rita Afsar is a Senior Research Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) in Dhaka. She has
been working in the areas of migration, urbanization, urban poverty and gender issues for about two decades. Both her
Ph.D. and Master's dissertations were based on rural-urban migration. She was honored by Pi Gamma Mu honor society
for her outstanding academic performance and elected as a member of the International Union of Scientific Studies on
Population (IUSSP).
Ahmad, Mohiuddin
Mr. Mohiuddin Ahmad is a Co-Team Leader at the Program Development Office for Integrated Coastal Zone Management
Plan (PDO-ICZMP), a project jointly financed by the governments of Bangladesh, the Netherlands and the United
Kingdom. He previously was the Chairman of the Community Development Library (CDL), which is a network of
development information and communication in Bangladesh. Mr. Mohiuddin Ahmad is a founding member of the South
Asian Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE), the Coordinator of South Asian People's Forum on River Water and
Environment, a Co-Convener of the People’s SAARC, and an ARENA Fellow.
Ahmad, Mokbul Morshed
Dr. Mokbul Morshed Ahmad is an Assistant Professor at the Asian Institute of Technology at Pathumthani, Thailand and is
affiliated with its School of Environment, Resources and Development. His research interests are in the areas of economic
geography, regional and rural development planning, community development, civil society and globalization.
Ahmed, Ahsan Uddin
Dr. Ahsan Uddin Ahmed is currently the Executive Director of Centre for Global Change (CGC), a non-profit policy
research organization in Bangladesh. He previously was Head of the Water and Environment Division at the Bangladesh
Unnayan Parishad (BUP). He has a strong research background in environmental pollution, atmospheric chemistry, and
issues related to climate change and sustainable development. He has been engaged in climate change related research
since 1990. He has been a member of IPCC since 1996 and contributed to the Third and Fourth Assessment Reports. Dr.
Ahmed holds a Ph.D. from Clarkson University, in the United States.
Ahmed, Asif
Mr. Asif Ahmed is an Assistant Auditor at KPMG Rahman Rahman Huq in Dhaka, Bangladesh (one of the leading
Chartered Accountancy firm in Bangladesh). Mr. Ahmed’s areas of expertise are Business Planning, Financial Accounting,
Management Accounting, Auditing, and Accounting Theory. He holds degrees and certificates from the Institute of
Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB), the University of Dhaka, and Hajigonj Model College.
Ahmed, M. Feroze
Dr. M. Feroze Ahmed is a Professor of civil/environmental engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering &
Technology (BUET) in Dhaka. His research areas include water supply, arsenic contamination of groundwater,
environmental pollution control, and environmental impact assessment. He received the Dr. Rashid Gold Medal in 2001.
Ahmed, Nazneen
Dr. Nazneen Ahmed is a Research Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) in Dhaka. Her
current research interests are in the areas of trade and development, WTO issues, trade liberalization, human capital and
industrial growth, and regional cooperation. Dr. Ahmed holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wageningen, in The
Netherlands.
Ahmed, Sadiq
Dr. Sadiq Ahmed is the Vice-Chairman of the Policy Research Institute in Dhaka Bangladesh. He was previously a Senior
Manager in the South Asia Regional Vice Presidency of the World Bank. Previous World Bank positions included (among
others) Sector Director for Poverty Reduction and Economic Management (PREM) in the South Asia Region; and Chief
Economist for the South Asia Region. His research areas include monetary economics, public finance, trade, and
development. Dr. Ahmed holds a Ph.D. from Boston University.
Akram, Tanweer
Dr. Tanweer Akram is Vice President at ING Investment Management, where he is responsible for developing the group’s
U.S. macroeconomic outlook. He has previously worked for Moody’s Economy.com, the Investment Climate Department of
the World Bank, A.T. Kearney’s Global Business Policy Council, and the Asia Department of the International Monetary
Fund. He was awarded the A.T. Kearney’s Sliver Prize for Intellectual Capital for leading the effort to develop a metric for
globalization. He was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue and has taught at Barnard College and
Columbia University in the United States, and North South University in Bangladesh. Dr. Akram holds a Ph.D. in
Economics from Columbia University in New York.
Akter, Nasima
Dr. Nasima Akter is a Research Fellow and Team Leader of the Environmental Research Unit at the Research and
Evaluation Department of BRAC. Her research areas include municipal and medical waste management, natural resource
conservation, renewable energy, health and environment, and environmental assessment. Dr. Akter holds a Ph.D. in
Environmental Technology and Management from the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand.
Alam, Md. Jahangir

at Andong National University in South Korea and holds a M.Sc. in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering from the

Alauddin, Mohammad
Dr. Mohammad Alauddin is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Economics at the University of Queensland, Australia. He
has been engaged in research, amongst others, on development, environment and sustainability, and economics
education. His current research project focuses on the sustainability of agricultural productivity growth in a changing
environment. Dr. Alauddin holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Newcastle, Australia.
Ali, Md. Korban
Mr. Md. Korban Ali is affiliated with Bangladesh Islami University, Gupibag, Dhaka, Bangladesh. His research topics are in
the area of population science, the modeling of fertility rates, and analyzing factors influencing infant and child mortality in
Bangladesh.
Ali, Muhammad Mahboob
Dr. Muhammad Mahboob Ali is Professor of Finance, Economics and Management and the Chair of the Department of
Business Administration at Atish Dipankar University of Science & Technology in Dhaka, Bangladesh. His research area
covers banking, money laundering, and globalization. Dr. Ali holds a Ph.D. in Economics (with specialization:
Macroeconomics) from University of Chittagong.
Ali, S. M. Zulfiqar
Dr. Zulfiqar Ali is a Research Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). His research focuses on
growth, inequality and poverty; human and social development; human wellbeing; applied economics; and natural
resources economics. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali holds a Ph.D. in Applied Economics from the University of Bath in the United
Kingdom.
Alim, Md. Abdul
Md. Abdul Alim is Research Associate in the Research and Evaluation Division of BRAC in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A
sociologist by training, he does research and evaluations on issues relating to social development and empowerment of
poor. He has expertise in qualitative and quantitative research methods. He holds a Master of Arts in Development
Studies with a Major in Local and Regional Development (LRD) from the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague, the
Netherlands, and a Master of Social Science (MSS) in Sociology from the University of Dhaka.
Aminuzzaman, Salahuddin M.
Dr. Salahuddin Aminuzzaman is a Professor in the Department of General and Continuing Education at North South
University in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He previously was a Professor in the Department of Public Administration at the
University of Dhaka. His areas of expertise are governance, local government and rural development. He also studies the
impact of mobile phones. Dr. Aminuzzaman holds a Ph.D. from the University of Philippines.
Asadullah, Mohammad Niaz
Dr. Mohammad Niaz Asadullah is a Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the Business School of the University of
Reading, UK. His areas of interest are applied microeconomics, development economics, and economics of education. Dr.
Asadullah holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Oxford.
Asaduzzaman, Md.
Dr. Md. Asaduzzaman is Research Director at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) in Dhaka, which he
joined in 1969 (which at that time was the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics). He holds his current post since
end 1997. He has extensive research experiences fall in the area of agriculture, natural resource management and rural
development. Within this broad area, his past research includes one of the first rigorous studies on technological change
in agriculture, institutional and management issues in rural infrastructure development, environmental issues such as
coastal environmental management, climate change, comprehensive evaluation of water resource development, and
comparative evaluation of poverty eradication programs under alternative institutional frameworks. Dr. Asaduzzaman’s
current research interests include modeling of Bangladesh trade under WTO and free trade rules, rural energy, energy
development and its governance with particular reference to the power sector, and private investment in schooling.
Ayers, Jessica M.
Dr. Jessica Ayers is a Researcher, Climate Change Group of the International Institute for Environment and Development
(IIED) in London, UK. Her area of expertise are on pro-poor climate governance; climate change adaptation finance,
planning and delivery; and community-based adaptation. Her current work areas include monitoring and evaluation of
adaptation mainstreaming (Nepal); political economy study of international adaptation processes; lesson-drawing around
community-based adaptation. Dr. Ayers holds a Ph.D. from London School of Economics (LSE) in the United Kingdom.
Bakht, Zaid
Dr. Zaid Bakht is a Research Director at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
His areas of expertise are related to rural industries, rural infrastructure, and fiscal, monetary, trade and industrial
policies. His main research areas include industrial policy & SME, private sector development, macroeconomic
management, trade policy and regional trade. Dr. Bakht holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Cornell University in the United
States.
Baqui, Abdullah
Dr. Abdullah Baqui is a professor at the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of
Public Health in Baltimore, United States. The objective of his current research is to improve child health and survival by
enhancing the understanding of the major causes of childhood morbidity and mortality and by designing and/or testing
cost-effective public health interventions against them. He is currently engaged in the development of interventions to
improve perinatal and neonatal health and survival; the epidemiology of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases;
the evaluation of diarrhea, vaccines, micronutrients, and the integrated management of childhood illness (IMCI) strategy.
Additionally, he is interested in research related to urban health care issues and in operations research to improve the
management, quality and sustain ability of health care delivery systems.
Barkat, Abul
Dr. Abul Barkat is a Professor of Economics at the University of Dhaka and a Chief Advisor for the Human Development
Research Centre (HDRC) in Dhaka. His expertise includes topics related to socio-economic analysis, poverty analysis and
research methodologies. Dr. Abul Barkat’s areas of research interest are: political economy of development and human
development; energy, development and poverty reduction; land-water-energy and development nexus; human right and
right to development including marginalized people; gender disaggregated budget analysis; policy research in health and
population; reproductive health and family planning financing and evaluation; cost and sustainability analyses; education
financing and evaluation; assessment and evaluation of management system; operations research (OR); primary health
care; human resource development; evaluation studies and needs assessments of social sectors and rural development;
social sector strategic planning; economics of fundamentalism; and regional energy trade and energy security.
Bates, Lisa M.
Dr. Lisa M. Bates is a Postdoctoral Research Scholar of the Robert Wood Johnson Health & Society Scholars Program of
the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy (ISERP) of Columbia University, USA. She is interested in how
social stratification and processes of social change translate into health outcomes. Dr. Bates combines training in social
epidemiology with a background in qualitative research and international health and is concurrently engaged in research
on the changing sociocultural and economic determinants of women's health in Bangladesh, with a particular focus on
women's empowerment and the mediating role of the institution of marriage. Prior to commencing her doctoral training,
Ms. Bates was involved in policy-oriented research on a range of population, development, gender, and reproductive
health topics. She holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Society, Human Development, and Health at the Harvard School
of Public Health.
Begum, Sharifa
Dr. Sharifa Begum is a Senior Research Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). Her current
areas of interest include health, population, poverty and gender. Dr. Sharifa Begum holds a Ph.D. in Population Studies
from the International Institute for Population Sciences in Deonar Mumbai, India. She also holds a M.A. in Economics from
Dhaka University and a M.Sc. in Medical Demography from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Bhuiya, Ismat
Ms. Ismat Bhuiya is a senior program officer with the Bangladesh component of the Frontiers in Reproductive Health
program of the Population Council. She has been conducting operations research in the areas of adolescent reproductive
health, sexually transmitted infections in men, and HIV and AIDS since 1993. She is also involved in developing the
national HIV/AIDS database. Bhuiya is the vice chair of the STI/AIDS Network, which is composed of national and
international NGOs in Bangladesh. Prior to joining the Population Council, she worked for Bangladesh's Ministry of
Science and Technology. She received a master's degree in laboratory science from Chittagong University and a master's
of public health from Dhaka University.
Billah, Md. Masum
Mr. Md. Masum Billahis the Head of the Research Unit at the Development Research Network (D.Net) in Dhaka,
Bangladesh. His areas of interest are Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D),
Geographic Information System, Remote Sensing, Urban Planning, Automation in Planning, Rural Development, and
Environment. Mr. Billah has a Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) from the Bangladesh University of
Engineering and Technology (BUET), in Dhaka.
Black, Robert E.
Dr. Robert E. Black is the Edgar Berman Professor in International Health and the Chairman of the International Health
Department at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, United States. He has focused his
research and professional activities on reducing the number of these unnecessary deaths. He is conducting epidemiologic
research on the interaction of infectious diseases and nutrition, clinical and community-based trials of new vaccines to
prevent childhood infectious diseases, and trials of nutritional interventions to reduce infectious disease morbidity and
mortality, as well as improve growth and development. He is also assisting with implementation of disease control and
nutrition programs in developing countries and conducting evaluations of their effectiveness and mortality impact. His
other interests are related to the use of evidence in policy and programs, estimation of the burden of disease,
development of research capacity and strengthening of public health training.
Caldwell, Bruce K.
Dr. Bruce K. Caldwell is a Research Fellow at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at the
Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. His research interests are in the areas of developing country urban
health, fertility decline, family planning, reproductive health, abortion, HIV/AIDS, and marriage patterns. He holds a Ph.D.
in Demography from the Australian National University.
Chaudhury, Nazmul
Dr. Nazmul Chaudhury is a Senior Economist in the Human Development Sector of the World Bank’s South Asia Vice-
Presidency. His research focuses on Bangladesh’s education system. Dr. Chaudhury holds a Ph.D. in Environmental
Economics from Michigan State University.
Chen, Yu
Dr. Yu Chen is an Assistant Professor at the Departments of Environmental Medicine and Medicine (Hospital Program) at
New York University. She has worked extensively on arsenic-related health issues in Bangladesh. Dr. Yu holds a Ph.D.
from Columbia University.
Chowdhury, Omar Haider
Dr. Omar Haider Chowdhury is a Research Director at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). His
research areas include economic development in general and nutrition and food policy, macroeconomic management,
social welfare and implications of improvements in social and physical infrastructure on the development of Bangladesh in
particular. Dr. Chowdhury holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of London. Dr. Omar Haider Chowdhury
diseased on 22. January 2010.
Chowdhury, Shyamal
Dr. Shyamal Chowdhury is Lecturer in Agricultural and Resource Economics at the Department of Agricultural Economics
at the University of Sydney, Australia. Before joining the University of Sidney, he worked for the International Food Policy
Research Institute (from 2003-2006), and the World Bank (2006-2007) in Washington DC, United States. Dr. Chowdhury
holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Bonn University, Germany. His research program has been and continues to
be shaped by the broad goal of trying to understand how development interventions influence households, particularly
poor households, under market imperfections.
Darmstadt, Gary L.
Dr. Darmstadt is an Associate Professor at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in
Baltimore, Maryland. He also is the Director of Johns Hopkins International Center for Advancing Neonatal Health and a
Senior Research Advisor for the Saving Newborn Lives Initiative, Save the Children/USA. He holds a Medical Doctorate
from the University of California at San Diego.
Dasgupta, Susmita
Dr. Susmita Dasgupta is a Lead Environmental Economist in the Sustainable Rural and Urban Development Team of the
World Bank’s Development Research Group. She is a specialist in empirical research in environmental economics and
has done extensive research on setting priorities in pollution control, estimation of pollution abatement cost, cost-effective
regulations, and poverty/environment nexus. She holds a Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Albany, United
States.
Davis, Peter
Dr. Peter Davis is the coordinator and a research fellow at the Social Development Research Initiative (SDRI), which was
established in 2009 in Bath, in the United Kingdom. He previously was teaching for ten years at the University of Bath. He
has worked in the development sector in South Asia, particularly Bangladesh, since 1987. From 1993 to 1996, Peter
established an NGO agricultural programme in Bangladesh's Kushtia district. Trained as an agricultural scientist, Dr.
Davis also holds a Ph.D. in Development Sociology from the University of Bath.
Deb, Uttam Kumar
Dr. Uttam Kumar Deb is an Additional Director for Research in the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) in Dhaka. His areas
of interest include Agricultural Trade Liberalization, Science and Technology Policy, Impact Assessment, and Food
Security. Dr. Deb holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), in The
Philippines.
Devine, Joe
Mr. Jo Devine lectures in International Development at the University of Bath, in the UK. His research interests lie in the
dynamics of social change and the politics of the development polity process, with a focus on wellbeing, poverty and
inequality; collective action and social mobilization; state-society relations; NGOs; religion; agrarian reform, natural
resources and coastal management; and human rights.
Dey, Madan M.
Dr. Madan M. Dey is a Professor in the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries of the University of Arkansas at Pine
Bluff, Arkansas. He previously was a Regional Director in The WorldFish Center. His research is known far beyond
Bangladesh, especially after developing a multi-market fish sector model for Asia that is used widely to analyze the impact
of different technologies and policy options. Another main contribution has been the development of frameworks for
assessing the impact of different types of aquatic resources research. Dr. Dey holds a Ph.D. in Aquaculture Economics
from the University of the Philippines at Los Banos.
Egashira, K. [Kazuhiko]
Dr. Kazuhiko Egashira is a Researcher in the Laboratory of Soil Science, Division of Soil Science and Plant Production,
Department of Plant Resources, Faculty of Agriculture of Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan. His research areas
include market research on vegetables; Bangladeshi soil analysis, especially of clay minerals and phosphor; and progress
in higher education and rice cropping systems.
Eusuf, Mohammad
Dr. Mohammad Eusuf is currently working as a Senior Fellow and Head of Energy Division in the Bangladesh Centre for
Advanced Studies (BCAS). He is the Bangladesh Team Leader of the ADB sponsored project - Renewable Energy,
Energy Efficiency and Greenhouse Gas Abatement (PREGA). Dr. Eusuf has been associated with research, development
and dissemination of energy technologies at Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) since 1964.
Eusuf, Mohammed Abu
Dr. Mohammed Abu Eusuf is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Development Studies at the University of Dhaka,
Bangladesh. His research topics focus on Bangladesh’s exports and foreign direct investment into Bangladesh.
Ghani, Ejaz
Dr. Ejaz Ghani is currently Economic Adviser in South Asia Poverty Reduction and Economic Management (PREM)
Network at the World Bank in Washington, DC. He previously taught Economics at Oxford University and Delhi University.
He studied Economics in Delhi University, Jawahar Lal Nehru University, and Oxford University. He has worked on Africa,
East Asia, and South Asia, and has a strong interest in globalization, growth, employment, and poverty. Dr. Ghani holds a
Ph.D. in Economics from Oxford University in the United Kingdom.
Gunter, Bernhard G.
Dr. Bernhard G. Gunter is the President of the Bangladesh Development Research Center (BDRC) in Falls Church,
United States. His areas of expertise include development macroeconomics, especially structural change, debt
sustainability analysis, and the social impact of globalization. He is also interested in analyzing poverty reduction policies,
development strategies, and the challenge of climate change adaptation. Dr. Gunter holds a Ph.D. in Economics from
American University in Washington, DC, United States.
Guhathakurta, Meghna
Dr. Meghna Guhathakurta is the Executive Director of Research Initiatives, Bangladesh (RIB), a research support
organization, which funds research for poverty alleviation and development. She was Professor of International Relations
at the University of Dhaka for the last 22 years. Her research areas cover a wide area of human rights (especially of
indigenous people), feminist thought, and South Asian politics. Dr. Guhathakurta holds a Ph.D. in Politics from the
University of York, in the United Kingdom.
Habib, Md. Mamun
Dr. Md. Mamun Habib is an Assistant Professor in the Operations Management Department at the Faculty of Business
Administration at the American International University in Dhaka, Bangladesh (AIUB). His interested research areas are
supply chain management, educational management, production & operations management, engineering management,
technology management. Dr. Habib holds a Ph.D. in Computer & Engineering Management from Assumption University of
Thailand.
Habib, Shah Md. Ahsan
Dr. Shah Md. Ahsan Habib is an Associate Professor at the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) in Dhaka
and the part-time Head of the Research and Program of D.Net (Development Research Network). His current research
activities focus on Public Access to Information and ICTs, the Development of the Foreign Exchange Market in
Bangladesh, Pro-Poor Trade Agreements, Developing Livelihood Skills Strategy and Action Plan for Urban Working
Children, Information Technology and Workers Remittances, Exploration of Trade Opportunities in Mode 4 under SAFTA,
Practices and Requirements of Commodity Hedging Operation, and Training Needs Assessment of Micro-Finance
Institutions. Dr. Habib holds a Ph. D. in International Finance from Banaras Hindu University in India.
Halder, Shantana
Dr. Shantana Halder is a National Expert on Monitoring and Evaluation at the Comprehensive Disaster Management
program (CDMP), a strategic institutional and programming approach that is designed to optimize the reduction of long-
term risk and to strengthen the operational capacities for responding to emergencies and disaster situations including
actions to improve recovery from these events by the Government of Bangladesh.
Haseen, Farhana
Ms. Farhana Haseen is a Research Associate at the Research and Evaluation Division of BRAC. She has Masters in
Nutrition from Institute of Nutrition & Food Science (INFS), the University of Dhaka and also Masters of Medical Science in
International Health from International Maternal and Child Health (IMCH),Department of Women's and Children's Health,
Uppsala University, Sweden.
Hassan, M. Kabir
Dr. M. Kabir Hassan is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Economics and Finance of New
Orleans University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is a financial economist with teaching, research and consulting
experiences in financial markets and institutions, corporate finance, applied economics and development finance.
Hossain, Akhtar (also Hossain, Akhand Akhtar)
Dr. Akhtar Hossain is an Associate Professor and the Head of Economics Discipline in the School of Economics, Politics
&Tourism of the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of Newcastle, Newcastle, Australia. His teaching and
research interests are in the areas of macroeconomics, monetary economics, and international trade and finance.

Mr. Dewan Mahboob Hossain is an assistant professor in the Department of Accounting & Information Systems at the
University of Dhaka in Bangladesh. His areas of expertise are in auditing, accounting theory, entrepreneurship
development, and strategic management. Mr. Hossain holds a Masters of Commerce (Accounting) from the University of
Western Sydney in Australia and the University of Dhaka.

There are three researchers with contributions relevant for Bangladesh’s development:
- Dr. Farhad Hossain is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Administrative Science of the University of
Tampere, Finland. His research areas include public administration, comparative and development

companies of Bangladesh, and microcredit. Mr. Farhad Hossain holds a Masters of Commerce and an MBA from

Dr. M. Kabil Hossain is an Environment and Climate Change Specialist and Researcher, working as consultant and
researcher in the field of environment and climate change for about 15 years. His areas of Interest are environmental
impact assessment and mitigation, environmental management planning, climate change, disaster risk management,
biodiversity, ecology and ecosystem, fisheries management, and sustainable development. Dr. Hossain holds a Masters
of Science in Zoology from Dhaka University and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from Rajshahi University in
Bangladesh.
Hulme, David
Dr. David Hulme is a Professor in Development Studies and the Director of the Chronic Poverty Research Centre (CPRC)
at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. His specific research interests are in the areas of rural
development policy and planning; poverty reduction strategies; finance for the poor; sociology of development; role of
community organizations and NGOs; evaluation of technical assistance; environmental management; and public sector
reform. Dr. Hulme holds a Ph.D. from the University of Queensland in Australia.
Huq, Mozammel
Dr. Mozammel Huq teaches in the Department of Economics at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. His particular
research interest is industrialization and the promotion of technological capability in developing countries. He directed
technology transfer studies in Ghana (1982-84) and Bangladesh (1988-91) and helped in supervising a technology link
program with the Royal Nepal Academy of Science and Technology during the 1990s.

Hussain, Md. Daulat
Dr. Md. Daulat Hussain is a Professor at the Department of Farm Power and Machinery, in the Faculty of Agricultural
Engineering and Technology at the Bangladesh Agricultural University in Mymensingh. He holds a Ph.D. in Agriculture
from the Institute of Agricultural Engineering of the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. His research areas

Dr. S. M. Ziauddin Hyder is teaching at the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto. He holds a

translation from research to policy and policy to practice; multi-micronutrient supplementation and interactions with

Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam is an Associate Professor of Physics at the Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology

Dr. M. Sarwar Jahan is Senior Scientific Officer in the Pulp and Paper Research Division of the Bangladesh Council of
Scientific & Industrial Research (BCSIR) Laboratories in Dhaka. His research areas include the pulp-making ability of jute
and trees growing in Bangladesh, alternative pulping processes for the production of paper, and organic acid pulping. He

Dr. Md. Jakariya is a researcher at the NGO Forum for Drinking Water and Sanitation in Dhaka and also collaborates with
the International Groundwater Arsenic Research Group at the Department of Land and Water Resources Engineering of
the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden, from where he holds a Ph.D. for his work on “Arsenic in
tubewell water of Bangladesh and approaches for sustainable mitigation”.
Kamruzzaman, Mohammed
Mr. Mohammed Kamruzzaman is a Doctoral Researcher in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. His research
topics include agricultural production practices and the analysis of technical efficiency in agriculture. Dr. Kamruzzaman
holds a M.S./M.Sc. from the Bangladesh Agricultural University in Mymensingh, Bangladesh.
Karim, Fazlul
Dr. Fazlul Karim is a Senior Research Fellow and the Coordinator for Tuberculosis Control Research at the Research and
Evaluation Division (RED) of BRAC in Dhaka. His main research interests are in the areas of nutrition, population, and
public health. Dr. Karim holds a Ph.D. in Medical Science from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.
Khair, Sumaiya
Dr. Sumaiya Khair is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Dhaka. She also holds executive positions in a

Dr. Azizur Rahman Khan is Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Riverside. His main research areas are

transitional economies, which has focused on the agrarian institutions and policies and planning systems in the socialist

Willard Smith Distinguished Teaching Award at the departmental level, Rosebush Professorship Award at the university
level, and recognized twice by American Political Science Association for Excellence in Teaching and Research.

Marks, Malcolm
Dr. Malcolm Marks is the Team Leader of Bangladesh’s Chars Livelihoods Programme (CLP). He joined CLP in February
2007 as Director of Innovation, Monitoring & Learning (IML) and was promoted to Team Leader on 15. May 2009. Malcolm
is particularly known as an “Africa-hand” having initially begun his career in teaching and research at the University of
Calabar, Nigeria in 1979 before making the move to development programs in 1989. He has worked on long-term
programs in Senegal, Gambia and Botswana and has carried out short-term consultancies in another 20+ countries. Dr.
Marks holds a Ph.D. in Ecology.
Mashreky, S. R. [Mashreky, S. M. Saidur Rahman]
Dr. S. R. Mashreky is an Epidemiologist and Director of the Centre for Injury Prevention and Research Bangladesh
(CIPRB), Bangladesh. Before joining CIPRB in 2005, he was working as an Assistant Professor in the Centre for Medical
Education Dhaka. After graduating in medicine from Rajshahi University in 1991, Dr. Mashreky completed his Masters in
Public Health and Diploma in Medical Education in 1996 and 1998 respectively. In December 2010 he completed his PhD
in burn epidemiology at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. He is now developing a framework for prevention of childhood
burn which could be applicable in Bangladesh as well as in other low-income countries.
Miah, Md. Danesh
Dr. Md. Danesh Miah is currently as Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Forest Policy Laboratory in the Faculty of Agriculture at
Shinshu University in Nagano-Ken, Japan. He also is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Forestry and Environmental
Sciences at the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. His research interests focus on biomass energy and environment,

Dr. Pratima Paul-Majumder is a Senior Research Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). She

Pitt, Mark
Dr. Mark Pitt is Professor of Economics and the Director of the Population Studies and Training Center at Brown
University in Providence, Rhode Island, the United States. His research focuses on theoretically informed analysis of the
demographic and health-related behaviors of households, primarily in the developing world, and has emphasized primary
data collection. Issues of gender and intra-household resource allocation are central themes, with the effects of targeted
micro-credit programs on household resource allocation being the most important topic he has tackled in recent years. Dr.
Pitt holds a Ph.D. in Economics from University of California, Berkeley in the United States.
Pokrant, Bob
Dr. Bob Pokrant is Professor of Anthropology in the Social Science program in the Faculty of Media, Society and Culture
at Currtis University in Perth, Western Australia. He is also Director of the South Asia Research Unit, which carries out
research and provides postgraduate training for students interested in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the

Quisumbing, Agnes
Dr. Agnes Quisumbing is a Senior Research Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). She co-
leads a research program analyzing the factors that enable individuals, households, and communities to move out of
poverty over the long term. Her past work at IFPRI focused on how resource allocation within households and families
affects the design and outcome of development policies. Her research interests include poverty, gender, property rights,
and economic mobility. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of the Philippines at Quezon City.

Dr. A. F. M. Ataur Rahman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics of North South University (NSU) in
Dhaka, Bangladesh. His research areas include applied microeconomics, mathematical economics, and financial
economics. Dr. Rahman holds a Ph.D. in Economics from American University in Washington, D.C., United States; and a B.
A. in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Rahman, Hossain Zillur
Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman was the Executive Chairman of the Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) in Dhaka,
until he was appointed as an adviser to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh on January 9, 2008, where he served
till January 6, 2009. Dr. Rahman played a lead role in the political negotiations which led to the parliamentary election on
December 29, 2008. His academic research includes the analysis of poverty trends, poverty alleviation, governance
problems and the dynamics of society. Dr. Rahman holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Manchester University in the United
Kingdom.

Mr. Masud Ibn Rahman is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Business and Economics at Daffodil International

Mr. Md. Rejaur Rahman is an Associate Professor of Geography & Environmental Studies at the University of Rajshahi,
Bangladesh. He is pursuing Doctoral Research in Geo-Information Engineering of Resources and Environment at the
College of Resources and Environment of Huazhong Agricultural University in Wuhan, China. He holds a M. Tech degree
in Remote Sensing and GIS from the Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific
((CSSTEAP) in Dehradun, India (one of the four regional centers for Space Science and Technology Education affiliated

Rahman, Rushidan Islam
Dr. Rushidan Islam Rahman is Research Director at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). She holds a
Ph.D. from the Australian National University. She has worked in a number of major research projects of BIDS, including
an evaluation of the impact of Grameen Bank and BRAC, studies on small scale irrigation projects, assessment of
agricultural growth performance and its distributional impact, women in poverty and linkages between employment and
poverty in Bangladesh. During the last ten years, she has been involved in policy advising through membership of various
committees and participation in policy dialogues of Government, NGOs and development partners. Her research interests

Dr. Shahidur Rashid is a Senior Research Fellow in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Division of the International Food

(BIDS), taught undergraduate classes at the University of Illinois, and was a visiting researcher at IFPRI. His current

Mr. Goutam Roy is the Research Coordinator at Plan Bangladesh. He was previously a Research Associate in the

Sack, David A.
Dr. David A. Sack is a Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Director of the ICDDR,B’
Centre for Health and Population Research in Bangladesh. His research has turned primarily from development of enteric
vaccines to directing a large research institute in a developing country. He continues to be very interested in facilitating
the development of vaccines for cholera, enterotoxigenic E. coli, and rotavirus, as well as other important vaccines for

United Kingdom. Her research is focused on the chars, river islands, of the Jamuna river in north-west Bangladesh. In

Shahabuddin, Quazi
Dr. Quazi Shahabuddin is Director General of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). He is currently
also a member of the Policy Analysis and Advisory Network for South Asia (PAANSA) under the South Asia Initiative of the
International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). He holds a Ph.D. from McMaster University, Canada. Prior to joining
BIDS as a Senior Research Fellow in 1991, he served as Deputy Chief in the Planning Commission, Government of
Bangladesh and as Consultant-Economist in the Master Plan Organisation under the Ministry of Water Resources. His
expertise is in the fields of growth performance and risk management in agriculture, management of water resources, food
policy analysis, and chronic poverty.

Capacity Building for Ensuring Safe Labour Migration (CABSLAM) Project of the Refugee and Migratory Movements
Research Unit (RMMRU), an affiliate of the University of Dhaka. She holds a Ph.D. from Griffith University in Australia.
Sobhan, Farooq
Farooq Sobhan is the President of the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI). He previously served for 33 years (1964-
1997) as a diplomat, including postings in Cairo, Paris, Belgrade, Moscow, New York, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing and New
Delhi. From 1997 to 1999, he was the Executive Chairman of the Government’s Board of Investment, where he was
responsible for the promotion and facilitation of all foreign and domestic investment in the country. During this period, he
also served as the special envoy of the Prime Minister with the rank and status of a state minister.
Sulaiman, Munshi
Munshi Sulaiman is currently on leave from BRAC, where he has been working at the Research and Evaluation Division
(RED) as Senior Research Associate since April, 2007. He joined RED in August 2004 as Staff Researcher. His research
interest includes extreme poverty, social network and microfinance. He obtained his Masters in Development Studies from

Sultana, Parvin
Dr. Parvin Sultana is a Senior Research Fellow at the Flood Hazard Research Centre (FHRC), an interdisciplinary centre
based in the School of Health and Social Sciences of Middlesex University, Queensway, UK. She holds a Ph.D. in natural
resource management from Colorado State University. Her research centers on water resources, fisheries, and integrated
floodplain management.
Thompson, Paul M.
Dr. Paul M. Thompson is a Senior Research Fellow at the Flood Hazard Research Centre (FHRC), an interdisciplinary
centre based in the School of Health and Social Sciences of Middlesex University, Queensway, UK. He holds a Ph.D. from
Middlesex University for work on the impacts of flood protection on rural development in Bangladesh. Has been associated
with the FHRC since 1981. He also worked for 8 years for the WorldFish Center in Bangladesh. His current research

Titumir, Rashed Al Mahmud
Mr. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir is Team Leader of Unnayan Onneshan - The Innovators (Centre for Research and Action
on Development). He was educated in the universities of Dhaka, London and Carleton in economics, development and
financial economics, and trade policy and commercial diplomacy respectively. Mr. Titumir is the founding faculty of the
Department of Development Studies at the University of Dhaka. He has managed several policy research programs
including a three-year-long Structural Adjustment Participatory Review Initiative (SAPRI).
Toufique, Kazi Ali
Dr. Kazi Ali Toufique is a Senior Research Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) in Dhaka. He

Public Administration at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka. He also is an independent researcher and part-time faculty
of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh (ICMAB) in Dhaka. His main research interests are in
the areas of public administration and public policy, local resources mobilization at rural local governments, government
budgeting, management control systems, managerial economics, and cost and management accounting. Dr. Ullah holds a
Ph.D. from the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand; his dissertation was on “Mobilisation of Local Resources for
Local Development in Bangladesh”.
von Brömssen, Mattias
Mattias von Brömssen is a researcher in the International Groundwater Arsenic Research Group at the Department of
Land and Water Resources Engineering of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden. He is also a Ph.
D. candidate at KTH, engaged in a doctoral project on “Options for safe drinking water in regions with high-arsenic
groundwater in Bangladesh”. He holds a M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering, with a specialization in Groundwater
Chemistry.
Wagatsuma, Yukiko
Dr. Yukiko Wagatsuma is a Professor in the Department of Clinical Trail and Clinical Epidemiology in the Graduate School
of Comprehensive Human Sciences at the University of Tsukuba, in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan. Her research fields are
international health, disease control, clinical epidemiology, clinical trial, climate change and human survival. She holds a

Wheeler, David
Dr. David Wheeler is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Global Development in Washington, DC, where he works on issues
related to climate change, natural resource conservation, African infrastructure development, sustainable development

Dr. Muhammad Yunus is the Founder and Managing Director of Grameen Bank. On October 13, 2006, the Norwegian
Nobel Committee award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2006, divided into two equal parts, to Muhammad Yunus and Grameen
Bank for their efforts to create economic and social development from below. Dr. Yunus holds a Ph.D. in Economics from
Vanderbilt University in the United States.
Zaman, Hassan
Dr. Hassan Zaman is a Lead Economist the World Bank’s central Poverty Reduction Unit in Washington, DC. He started
his professional career at BRAC in Bangladesh, where he worked on micro-credit issues for four years. He has published
in areas ranging from public expenditure management, education reform, poverty, food prices and NGOs. Dr. Zaman
holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom.
Zeller, Manfred
Dr. Manfred Zeller is a Professor at the University of Hohenheim, Germany and the Head of its Institute for Rural
Development Theory and Policy. He also is a member of the Scientific Council of the German Ministry of Economic
Cooperation and Development (BMZ). His recent research encompasses (1) the impact of climate change on sustainable
water management; (2) assessment of the social costs, poverty outreach and impact of agricultural, food, and rural
development policies in developing and transitioning countries; (3) the development and validation of operational
qualitative and quantitative social science research methods to measure absolute and relative poverty in rural and urban
areas; (4) development policies and strategies to promote pro-poor agribusinesses, micro-enterprises, micro-finance and
other rural institutions; and (5) the analysis of rural development and nature conservation policies and related trade-offs
and synergies between economic growth, poverty reduction and the environment. Dr. Manfred Zeller was a Research
Fellow at IFPRI and leader of its multi-country program on rural financial policies and food security from 1993 to 1999. He
holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Bonn.
Zohir, Sajjad
Dr. Sajjad Zohir heads an alternative research initiative under the umbrella of the Economic Research Group. He
previously was a Senior Research Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). His research areas
include the NGO sector, microcredit and poverty. Dr. Zohir holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Toronto in
Canada.
Zohir, Salma Chaudhuri
Dr. Salma Chaudhuri Zohir is a Research Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) in Dhaka. She
has vast experience in research on issues related to development economics with gender perspective in Bangladesh. She
has worked extensively in the areas of employment, gender and development and industry in general and particularly on
economic and social issues, and gender issues in industry including the readymade garment industry. She worked as a
project director of several national and internationally funded projects. Dr. Zohir holds a Ph.D. from the University of
